China Upside Down

Directed by Freddy Coppens; 2008; 52 minutes (Mandarin with English subtitles).In 1992, Deng Xiaoping's infamous slogan "it is glorious to get rich" unleashed one of the biggest revolutions in the thousand year-old country of China. This film profiles several families who rose from subsistence incomes to fabled luxury through the inventiveness and ambition of the extended family. The stories of these families provide an insight into the unique fusion of capitalism and communism that is becoming present day China. The film series is free and open to the public.

Urban Flow
Thursday, February 19, 2009 — 7:30pm
Duderstadt Center Video Studio

Developed by the Center for Southeast Asian Studies and the Center for South Asian Studies, with support from Arts on Earth. "Urban Flow" is an innovative education and theater project on the built environment of cities in Asia. Created by area studies students and faculty, this multimedia theater piece will explore the changing nature of city spaces, the lifeways those spaces help enable, and how transformations in the built urban environment brought about by globalization and economic change affect the daily life of residents in South and Southeast Asian cities. This performance will be free and open to the public.

  500 Years of American Grapes and Wines: A Remarkable Journey

Curated by Professor Daniel T. Longone, this exhibition features books and ephemera that define the history of American wine making from early failures and disasters to ultimate emergence in the twentieth century of wines with a wine industry second to none. The incongruous cast of characters Thomas Jefferson, Napoleon's soldiers, prohibitionists, Boston Brahmins, John Locke, the American cocktail, and more.
